The Eleventh International Conference on Multimodal Interfaces and the Sixth Workshop on Machine Learning for Multimodal Interaction was held jointly at the MIT Media Lab, widely known for its innovative spirit. Organized in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, ICMI-MLMI 09 provided an excellent setting for brainstorming and sharing the latest advances in multimodal interaction, systems and methods in an inspired setting of a city, known as one of the top historical, technological and scientific centers of the US.

Outstanding Paper Prizes

The outstanding paper awards highlight work that is exemplary. These are the papers that should serve as a model for how to perform and how to publish good research in multimodal interaction. They are the examples for the community to follow.

Outstanding Student Paper

Sponsored by Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories to specifically highlight the work of the students in our community, the title of 2009 ICMI-MLMI Outstanding Student Paper was bestowed on:

  • Agreement Detection in Multiparty Conversation by Sebastian Germesin of DKFI and Theresa Wilson of the University of Edinburgh.

Outstanding Papers

Sponsored by Google, the title of 2009 ICMI-MLMI Outstanding Paper was shared this year by: two papers

  • Multimodal Floor Control Shift Detection by Lei Chen of Purdue University and Mary P. Harper of the University of Maryland.
  • Dialog in the Open World: Platform and Applications by Dan Bohus and Eric Horvitz of Microsoft Research
